Track Star Christina Clemons Makes U.S. Olympic Team While Wearing Cool Ranch Doritos Earrings

The hurdler bought the now-trending jewelry at Hot Topic before her qualifying race.

On Sunday, Christina Clemons ran her way onto the U.S. Olympic team, finishing in third place in the 100-meter hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials and earning herself a spot in Tokyo next month. The 31-year-old Maryland native was already #goals because of her perseverance and dedication -- she's already overcome a supposed career-ending Achilles tendon injury -- but she's also scoring serious social media points because of her earring selection.

Clemons ran her blazingly fast 12.53s time while wearing a pair of earrings shaped like tiny bags of Cool Ranch Doritos. "I made the Olympic team wearing a bag of @Doritos on my ears," she Tweeted. "Twitter, I need y'all to do your thing! We need to blow Doritos mentions UP." That got the company's attention. "Congrats on the accomplishment," the @Doritos account replied. "Hit our DMs so we can talk."

In an interview with TMZ, Clemons said that her husband, Kyle, gave her the nickname 'Dorito' because she has "broad shoulders and a small waist." She was training at Alabama State at the time and, apparently, the Dorito thing really caught on with the other athletes. (Christina and Kyle are a pretty fast pair: he was a member of the gold medal-winning 4x400m relay team at the 2016 Olympics.)

In an emotional interview after she ran her qualifying time, Clemons said that she'd been trying to make the Olympic team for almost a decade now. "I've been going after this team since 2012," she said. "I ruptured my Achilles in 2013. I wasn't healthy enough in 2016. We had to wait a whole year in 2020 and now here I've been looked over [...] I'm just so happy."

Clemons told Yahoo Sports that she bought her now-famous accessory the night before the Olympic Trials, at a Hot Topic (!) in Eugene, Oregon. "When I bought them, I didn't think it would be a big thing at all," she said. "I was like, 'Oh, these are so cute.' I love Doritos and they matched my uniform, so I decided to wear them in the final." And she could make a pretty good return on that $8 investment: she told the outlet that Doritos said "they would like to talk" to her next month.

We're not going to be surprised if those little bags of Doritos make their way into Clemons' suitcase next month. A Cool Ranch good luck charm may be the very best kind of good luck charm.
