Most home cooks would agree that the best kitchen tools are often super straightforward. But sometimes a unique hybrid product that incorporates the best elements of a few products (like our favorite “blates” which function as both a bowl and a plate), is just what you need to fill a specific void in your kitchen arsenal. For me, that item is Opinel's Brunch Knife.

It’s a genius knife-spoon crossover that scoops and spreads with ease, and it has become a daily staple in my kitchen. Opinel, which specializes in a variety of knives, including utility, garden, and kitchen knives, considers their brunch knife one of their spreaders, and it has become a go-to for more than just perfectly dispersing cream cheese on my morning bagel

I’ve found the 4.5-inch long blade is just long enough to easily reach the bottom of most jars, and the rounded shape fits the curve of the jar perfectly, scooping out every last bit. Plus, if you buy natural peanut butter that requires stirring as I do, the length of the blade makes it easy to stir the peanut butter to the perfect consistency before scooping (a task I’ve found to be annoyingly difficult with a regular spoon).

The rounded edge also means there is more surface area, which is ideal for spreading viscous foods like peanut butter and honey or bulkier spreads like cottage cheese or loaded cream cheese. After more than two years of regular use, the stainless steel blade has held up. The micro-serrated edge cuts through English muffins and bagels with ease, yet it’s delicate enough to slice through a flaky croissant without smashing the pastry.

While this product has the word “brunch” in the name, I guarantee it will come in handy for meals and snacks throughout the day. It can accompany any set of cheese knives for your cheese or charcuterie board spread — after all, what is a cheese board without some jam? Plus, it is great for just about every step of crafting a sandwich. I use it to spread condiments like mayo and mustard, slice tricky toppings like tomatoes or sturdy toppings like cucumbers and peppers, and cut through my finished sandwich (diagonally to my preference!).

At $21, this knife comes at a great price due to its versatility. It’s been one of my favorite new kitchen purchases in the last couple of years, and my friends and family have enjoyed using it for daily use and entertaining. The wooden handle comes in a light beech wood and a vibrant orange color, making them a beautiful addition to any dining room table setting. One caveat to the knife is that it is not dishwasher-safe — the brand suggests hand washing to protect the wooden handle. Admittedly, I have run it through the dishwasher several times, and it has held up just fine.

Overall, the difference between this knife and a standard butter knife might seem small, but the control offered by the design will eliminate your need for a regular butter knife. If you are a spreads and sauces fan or love hosting friends and family, you’ll enjoy this well-crafted and versatile tool. You might just wonder how you functioned without it in the first place.
